  1. Phases of the Moon

  4. To become aware of the phases of the moon is to become aware of the Goddess as 
  5. expressed in her three aspects of maiden, mother and crone.   As Wiccans we seek 
  6. to attune ourselves with both the Goddess and the God.  Paying attention to the 
  7. phases of the moon and meditating on the appropriate aspect of the Goddess is a 
  8. powerful way to become more in tune with her.   It is also appropriate to 
  9. understand these phases and keep them in mind when working magic.  Thus magic 
  10. that deals with increase is best performed when the moon is waxing.  Similarly 
  11. the full moon is best for giving thanks and working magic aimed to reach our 
  12. fullest potential.  Finally the waning moon is best for removal of unwanted 
  13. energies, learning of the great mysteries and seeing beyond the veil.

  15. Simple put the three phases and what they represent are as follows:

  18.     Mother    Ripeness        Full Moon
  19.     Crone      Wisdom         Waning Moon

  21. Yet these three are ever one.  This idea was well expressed in The Witches Goddess 
  22. by Janet and Stewart Farrar:
  23.  
  24.     Behold the Three-Formed Goddess;
  25.     She who is ever Three - Maid, Mother and Crone.
  26.     Yet is she ever One;
  27.     She in all women, and they all in her.
  28.     Look on these Three, who are One, with a fearless love,
  29.     That you, too, may be whole.

  31. "Look on all Three who are One".   Meditate  and understand each  of the three 
  32. aspects as the phases of the Goddess.   In order to help you get in tune with these 
  33. phases it is helpful to look at each of them in a little more detail.   The rest of 
  34. this lesson brings together the ideas about an aspect, some Goddess names that 
  35. represent these ideas and a meditation to help you attune to that aspect.  It is 
  36. suggested that during the appropriate phase of the moon you look at what is 
  37. presented here for that phase.  Use the meditation as a starting point from which 
  38. to create a meditation of your own.

  40. Phase:  Waxing Moon
  41. Aspect: Maiden
  42. Rules: Birth, initiation, virginity, beginnings, the hunt, springtime, youth
  43. Goddesses:  Artemis, Nimue, Eos, Renpet, Siduri
  44. Color: White or silver
  45. Meditation (from Spiral Dance):
  46.     Ground and center. Visualize a silver Crescent moon, curving to the right. 
  47. ╩She is the power of beginning, of growth and generation.  She is wild and 
  48. untamed, like ideas and plans before they are tempered by reality.  She is the blank 
  49. page, the unplowed field.  Feel your own hidden possibilities and laten potentials; 
  50. your power to begin and grow.  See her as a silver-haired girl running freely 
  51. through the forest under the slim moon. She is the Virgin, eternally unpenetrated, 
  52. belonging to no one but herself.  Call her name "Nimue!" and feel her power within 
  53. you.

  56. Phase:  Full Moon
  57. Aspect: Mother
  58. Rules: Growth, fulfillment, sexuality, maturation, nurturing, love, ripeness, 
  59. teaching
  60. Goddesses: Diana, Mari, Gaia, Juno, Isis,╩Luna
  61. Color: Red or green
  62. Meditation (adapted from Spiral Dance):
  63.     Ground and center, and visualize a round full moon. She is the Mother, the 
  64. power of fruition.  She nourishes what the New Moon has begun.  See her open arms, 
  65. her full breast, her womb burgeoning with life.  Feel your own power to nurture, to 
  66. give, to make manifest what is possible.  She is the sexual woman;  her pleasure in 
  67. union is the moving force that sustains all life.  Yet she is also the protectress. 
  68. Against anything that threatens those she loves, she is merciless and terrible.  
  69. She is power.  Her color is the red of blood, which is life.  Call her name "Mari!" 
  70. and feel your own power and ability to love and protect.

  72. Phase:  Waning Moon
  73. Aspect: Crone
  74. Rules: Woman past menopause, old age, deep secrets, wisdom, divination, 
  75. prophecy, compassion, death and rebirth, endings.
  76. Goddesses: Hecate, Anna, Persephone
  77. Color: Black
  78. Meditation (from Spiral Dance):
  79.     Ground and center.  Visualize a waning crescent, curving to the left, 
  80. surrounded by a black sky.  She is the Old Woman, the Crone who has passed 
  81. menopause, the power of ending, of death.  All things must end to fulfil their 
  82. beginnings.  The grain that was planted must be cut down.   The blank page must be 
  83. destroyed, for the work to be written.  Life feeds on death - death lead on to life, 
  84. and in that knowledge lies wisdom.  The Crone is the Wise Woman, infinitely old.  
  85. Fell your own power to end, to lose as well as gain, to destroy what is stagnant 
  86. and decayed. See the Crone cloaked in black under the waning moon; call her name 
  87. "Anu!" and fell her power in your own death and rebirth.

  91. Seasons of the Sun
  92.  
  93. Just as the Goddess can be understood by paying attention to the Phases of the 
  94. moon, so can the God be recognized by paying attention to the seasons.   It is for 
  95. this reason that he plays such an important part in each Sabbat.   In Wicca there 
  96. are primarily two God-themes that are reflected in the Sabbats, that of the 
  97. Sun-God figure and that of the Oak King and Holly King.   The rest of this lesson 
  98. will look at these two themes and also discuss the God in his aspect as the Horned 
  99. One.

  101. The Sun-God Theme
  102.  
  103. The Sun-God rules the sky during our hours of activity.  His rising and setting 
  104. effectively mark the time in which we can work because we need his light to see 
  105. by.   He is also the Sky Father whose light fertilizes the earth and the hostile sun 
  106. that makes the desert barren.   In Wicca we trace his life through the seasons.  
  107.  
  108. At Yule, he is born as the embodiment of innocence and joy, of a childlike delight 
  109. in all things.  His is the triumph of the returning light.  At Candlemas his growth is 
  110. celebrated, as the days grow visibly longer.  At Eastra or the Vernal Equinox, He is 
  111. the green, flourishing youth who dances with the Goddess in her Maiden aspect.  On 
  112. Beltane, he is the young man who has fallen in love and takes the Goddess as his 
  113. bride.  Their marriage is celebrated with maypoles and bonfires.  At Summer 
  114. Soltices he consummates the marriage in a union that is so complete it becomes a 
  115. death.  He is named Summer-Crowned King instead of Winter-Born, and the crown 
  116. is of roses: the bloom of culmination coupled with the stab of the thorn.  He is 
  117. mourned at Lammas, and at the Autumnal Equinox He sleeps in the womb of the 
  118. Goddess, sailing over the sunless sea that is her womb.  At Samhain, he arrives at 
  119. the Land of Youth, the Shining Land in which the souls of the dead grow young 
  120. again, as they wait to be reborn.  He opens the gates that they may return and visit 
  121. their loved ones, and rules in the Dreamworld as He too grows young, until at Yule 
  122. He is again reborn.

  126. The Oak King and Holly King Theme
  127.  
  128. The Oak King and Holly King are twin gods that represent the cycle of fertility.   
  129. Each of them rules for half a year, fights for the favor of the Goddess and dies.   
  130. Yet the defeated twin is not truly dead; he merely withdraws during the six 
  131. months of his brother's rule into Caer Arianrhod, the Castle of the ever-turning 
  132. Silver Wheel. 
  133.  
  134. The Oak King ,who is the light twin, rules from midwinter to midsummer.  He 
  135. represents expansion and growth.   His tree, the oak, obviously symbolizes 
  136. strength and longevity; its acorn is expressively phallic; and its roots are said to 
  137. extend as far below ground as its branches do into the air - showing that the god 
  138. has dominion over Heaven, Earth and the Underworld.

  140. The  Holly King, who is the dark twin,  rules from midsummer to midwinter.  He 
  141. represents withdrawal and rest.  His tree, the holly, has leaves that are evergreen 
  142. and its bright berries glow red when all else is bare of fruit.  Thus while his reign 
  143. is one of withdrawal culminating in apparent lifelessness, his symbology reminds 
  144. us all the time that he is his brother's other self and holds life in trust while it 
  145. rest.

  147. The Horned God
  148.  
  149. The Horned God is a natural-fertility figure.  He is Oak King and Holly King, the 
  150. complementary twins seen as one complete entity. He is a vivid expression of the 
  151. son/lover of Mother Earth - swift-moving, wide-roaming, concupiscent, ever free.  
  152.  
  153. He is a hunter and yet he is respectfully killed to feed other creatures.  And 
  154. although he dies, he eternally reappear as strong and splendid as ever.  
  155.  
  156. He is that which impregnates the earth, and shepherds and defends her creatures.   
  157. His is the true wisdom of cosmic and terrestrial law.   
  158.  
  159. He is truly Lord of the Dance, for he represents the rhythms of life, growth, death 
  160. and rebirth.   But mostly he is the "Horned" God who reminds us that divinity and 
  161. nature are not separate.   His very appearance teaches us this by combining animal 
  162. and human aspects.

  165. Summary and Meditations

  167. Aspect: Sun God, Sky Father
  168. Represents:  The cycle of life
  169. Gods: Apollo, Helios, Lugh, Ra
  170. Color:╩Gold or yellow
  171. Meditation (adapted from Wicca A Guide For the Solitary Practitioner ):
  172.      Upon rising in the morning,  stand before the Sun and soak in╩it's energies.  
  173. Ground and center then think about the Sun God.  Visualize Him as you wish keeping 
  174. in mind what time of year it is.  (For instance, if it is near Yule you might wish to 
  175. visualize a child laughing in the sun.)    Reach out with your feelings; open your 
  176. awareness to higher things.  Chant out one of his names, such as Lugh or  Apollo 
  177. (Ah-PALL-low).   Call out to him with any words or sounds expressing your desire 
  178. to attune with Him.

  181. Aspect: Oak King
  182. Represents: Growth, Expansion 
  183. Gods:  Oak King, Jupiter, Janus, Dagda
  184. Color: Red
  185. Bird:  Robin
  186. Meditation (adapted from Eight Sabbats for Witches):
  187.     Ground and center.  Image you see a grove of oaks.   You enter the grove and a 
  188. man appears amidst the trees.  He looks a bit like Robin Hood - a handsome blond 
  189. man dressed in green.  His staff is of oak and  he wears oak leaves in his hair.  He 
  190. steps out into the glade and sunlight lights up his face.  He looks at you and speaks:

  192. I am a stag of seven tines;
  193. I am a wide flood on a plain;
  194. I am a wind on the deep waters;
  195. I am a hawk on a cliff;
  196. I am fair among flowers;
  197. I am a god who sets the head afire with smoke.

  199. You feel his energy within you and know the part of yourself that is the Oak King.  
  200. You now can stay with him a while learning from his ways.   When you are ready 
  201. you see him disappear back into the trees and you open your eyes.

  204. Aspect: Holly King
  205. Represents: Withdrawal, rest, lessons 
  206. Gods: Holly King, Saturn, Bran, Cronos
  207. Color: Black
  208. Bird:  Wren
  209. Meditation (adapted from Eight Sabbats for Witches):
  210.     Ground and center.  Image you are walking in the snow.  All around the trees are 
  211. barren and no sign of life appears.   As you are walking you spot a holly tree, its 
  212. leaves still green and its fruit a bright red.    A man walks out dressed in a cloak 
  213. of fine ermine.  His  hair and beard are black and there is a twinkle in his eye.   
  214. Power seems to pour out from him.   He looks at you and speaks:
  215.  
  216. I am a battle-waging spear;
  217. I am a salmon in the pool;
  218. I am a hill of poetry;
  219. I am a ruthless boar;
  220. I am a threatening noise of the sea;
  221. I am a wave of the sea;
  222. Who but I knows the secrets of the unhewn dolmen?

  224. You feel his energy within you and know the part of yourself that is the Holly King.  
  225. You now can stay with him a while learning from his ways.   When you are ready 
  226. you see him disappear back into the trees and you open your eyes.

  229. Aspect:  Horned God
  230. Represents:  Untamed, fertility, the hunt, the sacrifice, divinity within nature
  231. Gods: Horned God, Pan, Kernunnos (Care-NOON-nos), Herne
  232. Color:  Green
  233. Meditation: 
  234.     Ground and center.  You are walking at night with the moon guiding your way.  
  235. The stars are so bright that you can see each of them.   In the distance you can 
  236. hear the cry of a wolf.   Then all of the sudden the woods are filled with the sound 
  237. of reed pipes.   The music seems to call to you.  As  you follow your steps turning 
  238. into dancing.   As you dance you are drawn into the presence of the Horned One.    
  239. Standing before him  you are struck with  awe.  For here is the embodiment of the 
  240. God; at once wild, sexual,  and powerful while at the same time gentle, protective 
  241. and caring.  He starts to dance with you and the creatures of the wild arrive to add 
  242. power to the dance.   You continue dancing and you notice that he is looking at the 
  243. moon with unmistakable love.  As you finish the dance you feel your connection to 
  244. him and just for a moment you become him.  Then when the dance is over he is 
  245. suddenly gone but in your mind are his teaching and in your heart is his song.  You 
  246. stay a moment to reflect on what has transpired and then open your eyes.
